Tracking Scholars' Data - Suggestions and Material Samples

This is another one of my favorite things to share! I remember when I used to have binders and more binders, all color-coded to track all the data, year-round, for all my MLs - from newcomers' initial evaluations to Exited MLs monitoring status. Let's not forget their classroom performance notes and applicable strategies for each scholar based on their language needs. Just talking about it can be exhausting and seem like an impossible task to complete effectively. Well, not anymore! Here are some of the tools and strategies I have used to make this task more manageable for me as the only ML teacher at my current school. However, if you have multiple ML teachers, this should make things even easier for your team.

My district uses WIDA to screen, assess, and monitor multilingual learners. Since the scores for the 4 language domains - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - come in whole and decimal numbers, I use a graph to assist scholars in understanding their scores and taking ownership of their language goals. With this graph, scholars can color the ACCESS graph based on their scores and set up goals for the school year. We keep the graph all year in our ML folder and revisit the graph and goals as a monitoring tool for scholars.

  • 4 tabs for each class:

  1. Overall: Basically the 1st column is the teacher's name, additional services are the 2nd column (EC, 504...), Level of ESL service, and the data-at-a-glance spreadsheet (WIDA L, S, R, W, PL, Reading level and MAP Math/Reading BOY, MOY, EOY, and EOG)

  2. Conference: ACCESS graph, Goals, LEP plan, and Parent communication

  3. Dolch Sight Words: Pre-primer, Primer, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, flashcards date

  4. Differentiation: Classroom Modifications from Ellevation and Testing Accommodations

 

  • 4 tabs:

  1. # of MLs

  2. # of MFLEPs

  3. Survey completion for support needed when working with MLs

  4. 1 column for each Survey question (3 sets for BOY, MOY, EOY survey)
